Norway: GBViE Advisor- Specialization in MHPSS

Norwegian Church Aid can now offer a very exciting position within the Humanitarian Division in the Department for International Programmes. In this position, you will support humanitarian responses by strengthening our psychological care (PC) interventions within the Gender-based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) programmes.

Mental Health and Psychological Care (MHPC) are essential components of a comprehensive package of care to promote psychosocial wellbeing and prevent mental disorders among GBV survivors. Survivors of GBV are at increased risk for a range of mental health problems including depressive or anxiety disorder, PTSD, suicidal ideation and self-harm. There are also several psychological consequences of GBV that may not reach clinical threshold for diagnostic criteria but nonetheless have long term disabling impacts such as shame, self-blame, fear and stigma and associated experiences of social exclusion. The consequences go beyond individual traumatization.

NCA will work towards enhancing global promising practices and scalable psychological interventions for survivors of GBV that are integrated within an existing GBV response service; and strengthen supervisory capacities and structures within teams working directly with survivors with complex needs to support the delivery of individually and culturally tailored approaches and interventions.

This position includes traveling between 90 to 120 days per year, pending on needs for shorter and longer term. The post is based in NCAs Headquarters in Oslo. (We may also be willing to be flexible for the right candidate, someone with the right skills and experience, who wants a mix of home and field-based assignments.) The position is initially a one-year contract, with the possibility of an extension.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and strengthen a framework and model for specialized therapeutic interventions in line with GBV survivors needs and within the GBViE programmes
  • Support developing an evidence-base for the therapeutic interventions together with academic institutions
  • Develop and strengthen training materials for therapeutic interventions
  • Facilitate capacity building and mentoring of partners and NCA staff in specialized therapeutic interventions for GBV survivors
  • Provide technical support on mental health and psychological care to GBViE programmes
  • Provide technical support to GBViE programmes
  • Represent, co-chair, coordinate different MHPSS-related networks

Qualifications

  • Mental health/therapy professional with MA or equivalent in psychology, clinical social work, nurse with specialization in psychiatry/psychology, therapist or similar
  • Experience in facilitating participatory trainings on utilizing therapeutic interventions, such as CBT, mentalization and other interventions for non-professionals
  • Experience in using and facilitating training in PM+, CETA, and/or mhGAP is highly desired
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing GBViE programmes
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in areas affected by conflict and / or humanitarian disasters
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, French and Arabic advantage
