Humanitarian Analyst

Save the Children Norway (SCN) has a vacancy as Humanitarian Analyst, responding to the needs for high quality conflict and context analysis to ensure conflict sensitive, child focused and principled humanitarian programs. The position is a full-time position for one year, with potential for extension.

The Humanitarian Analyst will be part of the SCN Humanitarian Unit based in Oslo and will report to SCN’s Humanitarian Director. In addition, the role is also a key member of Save the Children’s Context Analysis and Foresight Unit (CAFU), a network coordinated a global level by Save the Children’s Chief Analyst, based in Stockholm.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Deliver high-quality analyses of conflict-affected areas to support humanitarian and protection programming
  • Actively track trends and developments in SC humanitarian focus countries, including access and protection issues
  • Deliver in a timely manner multi-purpose context and conflict analyses upon request to support strategic exercises and programming (proposal development, country strategic plans, emergency preparedness plans, etc.).
  • Ensure the uptake of conflict analysis findings to inform conflict-sensitive programmes in support to Country Offices, Humanitarian Response teams, and Save the Children Norway Head Office.
  • Build the analytical capacity of Save the Children and its partners, including the development of guidance materials for Save the Children’s teams and partners to conduct rapid conflict assessments in complex contexts, with a focus on children’s specific vulnerabilities and protection needs in conflict.
  • Lead the delivery of outcomes related to conflict analysis in the Protecting Children In Conflict global agenda
  • Facilitate trainings and workshops for joint conflict analysis in various settings as requested.
  • Take an active role in the Context Analysis and Foresight Unit, directly contributing to the Unit’s objective of putting conflict and context analysis at the heart of Save the Children’s strategic thinking and operations and becoming an agent of change within the organization
  • Successfully communicate with Save the Children Norway home donors and strategic counterparts, including academia and research institutes, on issues related to context analysis and conflict-sensitive programmes in order to raise Save the Children’s external profile and visibility.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field (Peace and Conflict studies, International Relations, Strategic Studies, or related discipline)
  • Solid knowledge of conflict analysis (tools, qualitative and quantitative methodologies) including analysis of the humanitarian impact of conflict on civilians/children
  • In depth understanding of humanitarian contexts, policies and issues, including protection of civilians and humanitarian access
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working for an aid organization in analytical capacities, including working in humanitarian contexts/conflict areas.
  • Ability to effectively operate in a fast-paced, complex global organization
  • Demonstrated experience of researching, analyzing, writing and editing documents of highest quality on tight deadline
  • Superior writing and presentation skills in English,
  • Proficiency in other languages desirable (French and/or Arabic in particular)
  • Record of excellent coordination and networking skills
  • Demonstrated experience in capacity building, workshop facilitation and mentoring
  • Record of research, peer reviewed publications and writing on conflict issues
